HULL Wasps were sent crashing back down to Earth with a 77-74 defeat at Bury Blue Devils, their first of the season in NBL division four.

The Wasps spent the majority of a close encounter trying to recover from a poor first quarter that left them trailing 22-13.

Only centre Michal Kucmierczyk provided much in the way of offence, hitting seven of his 13 points in the first period.

An improved second quarter saw the visitors recover to within three points by the end of the half, thanks to a 10-point burst from guard Kamil Pilarski, who finished the game with 12.

And the Wasps continued to improve in the third period as forward Jamie Goodwin recovered from a poor first half to hit  10 of his 17 points in a five-minute spell that helped put Hull up by three going into the final quarter.

But an injury to Pilarski and foul trouble for key guards John Kelsey and Rob Birchmore disrupted the flow of the normally defensively sound Wasps.

Not until coach Chris McKenna switched his side into a zone defence did they show some of the strong defensive play that has been a feature of their fast start to the season.

But it was on the other end that his side hurt themselves with bad decisions as a number of turnovers late in the game were continually converted by Bury’s high-scoring forward line.

The Wasps were also hamstrung by their inability to convert a single three-point shot throughout the contest.

Forward James Rayner added nine points and Birchmore hit eight in another balanced offensive showing.
